The National Visa Center (NVC) processes immigrant visa petitions for immigrants from all over the world according to the Department of State (DOS) standards. Most immigrants are sponsored by relatives who are either citizens or Legal Permanent Residents of the United States.
Visa Processing Specialists are responsible for creating a unique computer record of each immigrant visa petition that comes to NVC from the Immigrant and Naturalization Service (INS) offices. At all levels of the organization, NVC handles daily work according to productivity and quality mandates from DOS. To meet these mandates, NVC instituted a quota system and a quality assurance process. Feedback on both is given at all processing stages.
This position involves approximately 40% data entry and 60% analytical skills. The initial training phase takes about 4 weeks, during which all of the fundamentals of processing are learned. At the end of the 4-week period, the employee is expected to meet quota of 13.5 petitions per hour with acceptable quality.
At various levels within NVC, Visa Processing Specialists review and update existing records based on special DOS criteria. Visa processing requires the discipline to consistently adhere to procedures as dictated by DOS. Procedures and guidelines address specific requirements for the various countries where the visa will ultimately be issued.
Candidate Requirements are as follows:
¨ Must be either U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
¨ High school diploma or GED
¨ Must pass a typing and a data entry test prior to the interview process. Minimum typing requirements are 30 words per minute (net) and 6,200 keystrokes per hour on the data entry test with no more than 10 errors.
¨ Familiarity with general MS Windows commands and shortcut keys
¨ Must pass a DOS security clearance
All NVC employees are expected to exhibit a high standard of work ethic and adhere to all DOS and SI International corporate policies.
